Understanding Procrastination: Listening to Your Mind and Body

Have you ever wondered why we procrastinate? Procrastination is a common phenomenon that many of us experience from time to time. We often label ourselves as lazy, and ponder how to stop procrastinating. Have you ever considered that there might be underlying reasons causing this behavior? Have you ever asked if am I lazy or burnt out?

Let’s explore together the importance of listening to your mind and body when it comes to understanding procrastination. By doing so, we can uncover the true factors that contribute to our tendency to delay tasks and find ways to effectively address them.

Identifying the Source of Procrastination

Instead of immediately assuming laziness, take a moment to reflect on what might be causing your procrastination. It could be stress, feeling overwhelmed, or even a lack of energy. Recognizing these factors allows you to address the root cause rather than blaming yourself for being lazy.

Recently, I was tired and I ignored listening to my body’s signals. I registered for yoga classes and started walking towards the gym. Luckily, my neighbor met me in the apartment lobby and asked me if I was ok. I asked her back if I looked tired. She replied, “Yes, you could use some sleep.” That is when I realized that I was not lazy, I was really tired. I did not go to the yoga class, I went to the sauna as that is what my body needed.

Understanding the Impact of Stress

Stress is a significant contributor to procrastination. It can stem from various areas of life, such as work or personal issues. When stress builds up, it can affect our productivity and lead to avoidance behaviors. By acknowledging and addressing stressors, we can create a more supportive environment for our minds and bodies to thrive.

I was at the contract, where it was a chain of stressful situations for almost two years, I lost focus as I was in a chronic stress situation, till I was offered the right people to help me and that helped me to focus back.

The Importance of Rejuvenation

Sometimes, we need a break to recharge ourselves. Ignoring the signals our bodies and minds send us can have negative consequences. Taking time off to rejuvenate can be crucial for our overall well-being and productivity. It’s essential to listen to our inner selves and recognize when we need a pause before stepping into new challenges.

My last program was very demanding and it was energy-depleting. At the same time, I knew that the client was going to end the contract and I would be laid off. I first tried to look for a job but I realized that was taking a toll on my body. I went to acupuncture and I realized that my stress and anxiety were coming to my heart. I immediately stopped looking for a job but planned well to start saving money to take a career break. I knew deep down that I needed some rest to rejuvenate before I went back to the job market again. I can choose to take life positively and take this opportunity while not working to focus on my self-care.

Avoiding Confusion and Prioritizing Self-Care

Confusion can often cloud our judgment, causing us to ignore our body’s signals. We should actively listen to our minds and bodies, even when external pressures push us to ignore their messages. Our society does not want us to quit, that is a sign of heroism or being a winner. We all want to be good in the eyes of our peers but that is not possible. By trying to juggle all when our mind and body are shouting to be listened to, we are only giving ourselves a feeling of self-sabotage.

I have done self-sabotaging, confusing myself and ignoring my intuitions as I am trying to go with the norms of society. For example, my body will tell me on a day when I am having a headache to not work without having a sign of the flu but my body knows that the flu is coming and asks me loudly to rest. In the past, I have ignored such signals only to feel sick for a week. Now, I take off immediately, my body gets strength to fight back viruses and I am all well and strong the very next day. I later learned to focus on self-compassion and that helped me with my self-care.

Procrastination is not always a result of laziness; it can be a symptom of underlying issues. Understanding procrastination psychology is very important. By actively listening to our mind and body, we can uncover the true reasons behind our procrastination and take steps toward addressing them. Remember, self-care and rejuvenation are essential for maintaining productivity and overall well-being.

So, next time you feel the urge to label yourself as lazy, take a moment to reflect and understand what your mind and body are trying to tell you and address what they are saying.
